These are very dangerous times for our NHS, arguably the best institution our country has ever had. Healthcare free at the point of use is a system that is the envy of the world- or it used to be.
My GP surgery, over 3 years ago, was taken over by Richard Branson’s Virgin “Care”. Since that day the decline of a once decent Doctors Practice has been frightening, and terribly sad.
When Branson took over, all the problems began, and for the second time the surgery has been placed in Special Measures by health inspectors.
I have no named GP. I never see the same person twice. Filling out any forms where you are asked your GP’s name is troublesome.
That, however, is not the only problem. If you’re sick and need an appointment, expect to wait for around 3 weeks. They tell you to call in the morning for a same day appointment- I once called 89 times and didn’t get through. They will tell you to queue outside from 8am, but, again, all appointments are gone.
Prescriptions are never on time. I have seen elderly people break down because they have been without essential medication for up to 10 days. I have witnessed a dialysis patient break down because their medication has not been ready after 4 working days.
This is only what I have witnessed. Barely a week goes by without the surgery being in the local newspapers for failing people.
I personally know of two families pursuing legal action against the surgery, because of the neglect of a family member. My partner, having pushed for a referral to hospital, was diagnosed with high grade bladder cancer and underwent many sessions of Chemotherapy and surgery.
My partner should have been under the palliative care team, but there doesn’t seem to be one. On many occasions getting him an appointment has been difficult, and on many occasions, his (vital) medication has been late. The side effects of running out are pretty horrendous, and totally unnecessary, as I always put his prescription in a week before.
This is just my experience, and I know there are many, many more. I have complained directly to Virgin “Care” with little satisfaction, I have complained to the Health Authority, and I have complained to my MP James Cleverly, who never got back to me.
I suppose what I’m trying to say is that people who profiteer from Healthcare, should not be allowed anywhere near it.
The creeping privatisation of our NHS is sinister and must be stopped. No one should profit from the ill health of others. Our NHS is something to be treasured, not sold off to the likes of Branson, who, let’s face it, struggles to get a train to run on time.
Since my surgery was sold off to Virgin “Care”, I know people have got sicker, I know people have died unnecessarily, and I know many others are not being properly diagnosed, or diagnosed too late.
This is unacceptable. This must be stopped, and it will be under a Jeremy Corbyn led Labour Government.
Labour are the party of the NHS. The NHS is only safe in Labour’s hands. Please vote Labour and save our NHS from grasping profiteers who care not about the poor health of patients, and only care about profits.
